Long thoughts coming in essay form early next week at The Guardian.Erin goes to work for an attorney and comes across medical records describing illnesses clustered in one nearby town.
She starts investigating and soon exposes a monumental cover-up. This is a prime showcase of a David-and-Goliath legal battle that thrives even more due to its no nonsense humor and tugging personal drama. ![]() ![]() What I like about Erin is that she exudes this imperfect survivor who doesnt quit from lifes misfortunes, and keeps rolling on ahead despite the many bumps on the road. Steven Soderberghs Erin Brockovich is exactly the uplift picture youve always hoped for. Strong acting, moving script, essential issues, legitimate procedurals, and best of all, it is scrupulously faithful to its true story. Struggling outspoken single mom, Erin is played by Julia Roberts, who provided an Oscar-winning performance proving that she is more than just tits and teeth. She gets on with a law firm run by Ed Masry (Albert Finney) just in time to break open the biggest direct action corporate lawsuit in American history. He tells a story, a complete story, with all the facts and all the details and all the characters, and most of the time it ends in a satisfying conclusion. Erin Brockovich is no different, often choosing this efficiency over excitement. There are several scenes of people talking, or rather her asking questions and them explaining things. Theres even a scene where shes photocopying and we just read the words. Wow, this is coming across really negatively - I really like Soderberghs films, Im just trying to make a point. Im also not wrong. Erin Brockovich Film Movie Is BetterANYWAY,) What Im trying to say is that the reason this movie is better. What it doesnt do that all of his rubbish films and even his occasional good one, like Out Of Sight, usually do is have crap dialogue. I always find his dialogue to be really stilted and occasionally absolutely laughable in the case of the amazingly shit Sex, Lies And Videotape, but here people actually talk to each other like people talk to each other in real life. It helps an enormous amount in a film that is so heavily reliant on dialogue. But to be completely truthful, if it wasnt for the excellent exchanges and on-point performances from Julia Roberts. Erin Brockovich is a courtroom movie without a courtroom, because ultimately this deserves to be the story of real hardworking people, not callous corporate lawyers arguing semantics. It is a passionate attack on corporate greed, and depicts poverty without judgement or contempt. ![]() This is a solidly made film that perfectly matches indie sensibilities with a mainstream production. I like that films such as this exist, especially when they are so watchable.
